Training camps are special multi-day experiences where students train intensively and bond as a team. These camps often include outdoor activities such as hiking and practicing martial arts in nature, alongside unique routines like sunrise training, meditation, and mindfulness sessions. Theoretical lectures on martial arts philosophy, techniques, and fitness further deepen participants' understanding, making these camps both enriching and memorable.

At HMD Basel, we believe in the power of fresh air and the outdoors. From time to time, we organize outdoor training sessions that offer a refreshing way to experience martial arts training. Whether it's running, functional drills, or adapting movements to natural surroundings, these sessions take place throughout the year—even in winter. Held in various locations across Basel, from urban spaces to more natural areas, outdoor fitness provides a unique training environment where martial artists can challenge their bodies in different ways. Training outdoors also offers a change of pace, fostering mental resilience and offering new ways to connect with nature while staying engaged in martial arts practice.

HMD Basel actively participates in national and international tournaments and events organized by WAKO. Whether you're aiming for experience or seeking recognition, these events are an excellent platform to showcase your abilities.

We offer a broad range of seminars and workshops designed to deepen skill, expand knowledge, and support well-rounded development. Our seminars, organized through HMD and WAKO, focus on traditional martial arts and modern fighting techniques, providing in-depth training on technical refinement, strategic application, and the latest developments in the field. Alongside these, our cross-disciplinary workshops introduce practices such as functional fitness, yoga, and strength conditioning. This holistic approach helps students build balance, mobility, and resilience, enhancing both performance and overall well-being. These learning opportunities strengthen technique, encourage continuous growth, and foster connection within a supportive martial arts community.

Got questions?
We've got answers
-
Is HMD Basel suitable for complete beginners?
Absolutely! Most of our members started with zero martial arts experience. We specialize in welcoming beginners with patient instruction and a supportive community. You'll train alongside people of all levels, and everyone remembers what it's like to be new. No need to be in shape or have any prior experience, we'll meet you wherever you are.
-
What exactly is Hwalmoodo? I've never heard of it.
Hwalmoodo is a modern martial art rooted in traditional Korean disciplines. It combines traditional forms with modern kickboxing and functional fitness. Think of it as the best of both worlds—you'll learn authentic martial arts techniques and philosophy while getting a great workout. It's unique to Basel, so you won't find this training anywhere else in the area.
-
Will I be forced to spar or compete?
Not at all! Sparring is completely optional and only happens when you feel ready and choose to participate. Many of our members train for fitness, personal development, and stress relief without ever sparring. For those who do want to compete, we offer pathways to WAKO tournaments, but there's absolutely no pressure.
-
Is the training too intense? I'm worried about getting hurt.
We train smart, not just hard. Our approach focuses on proper technique, gradual progression, and injury prevention. The atmosphere is respectful and controlled, no egos or showing off. Everyone looks out for each other, and you'll always train at your own pace.
-
What should I expect in my first class?
You'll be warmly welcomed and guided by the instructor. We'll give you an overview of what we're doing, and you can participate as much or as little as you feel ready for. Expect some basic techniques, movement, and maybe some light conditioning—nothing intimidating! Most people leave their first class thinking 'that was way more fun than I expected.'
-
Do I need any special equipment to start?
Nope! Just come in comfortable workout clothes. We have all the equipment you need for your first few sessions. Once you decide to continue, we can guide you on what basic gear is needed for full safe training, but there's no pressure to buy anything expensive right from the start.
-
What if I can't make it to regular classes due to my schedule?
We get it, life is busy! For that we offer options spot classes. You can also join our sessions through FitPass or ClassPass.
-
Is everyone super fit and advanced? Will I feel out of place?
Our community includes people of all fitness levels, ages, and backgrounds. Some are athletes, others are just looking to try something new and get moving. What unites everyone is a shared respect for learning and supporting each other. You'll fit right in, we're more like a family than a hardcore gym.
-
How long before I see results or feel competent?
Everyone progresses differently, but most people start to feel more confident and capable within a few weeks. You'll start learning basic techniques right away, and fitness improvements usually show up pretty quickly too. The beauty of Hwalmoodo is that there's always something new to learn, so you'll keep growing whether you've been training for months or years.
-
What makes HMD different from other martial arts schools in Basel?
We're the only place in Basel teaching authentic Hwalmoodo, so you're getting something truly unique. Plus, we focus on building a welcoming community rather than an intimidating competitive environment. Our training combines traditional martial arts wisdom with modern fitness approaches, and we emphasize personal development alongside physical skills. It's martial arts for real life, not just fighting.
